Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cannot be made directly from polymerizing vinyl alcohol because vinyl alcohol is an unstable tautomer or isomer of acetaldehyde. To make it polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) is hydrolized with base to make polyvinyl acetate.
