Our Recipe for "Blood-Clot Slime"!
Although all the materials are
"store-bought", children must perform the following procedure under adult
supervision. None of the materials are meant to be ingested and, as
always, wear your goggles. Be careful with your nice clothes. They may be
stained by the "blood".
- Materials:
- Goggles
- 2 disposable cup cups
- 1/4 cup borax (Mule Team) instead of boric acid

- 2 cups of water
- Half of a 255 milliliter (mL) bottle of gel glue (Elmer's Washable Gel
School Glue)
- Half of a 1 fluid ounces (fl. oz.) bottle of iodine tincture (2 %
iodine, 47% alcohol)
- One large disposable cup (32 fl. oz)
- Wood sticks (or another disposable thing to stir with)
- Gloves (optional)

- Procedure:
- Prepare a borax in water saturated solution.
- Put on your goggles.
- Measure 1/4 cup of borax into an empty cup.
- Add enough water to fill the borax cup and stir the borax-water
mixture with a stick for about five minutes. Not all of the borax
will dissolve. When a solid does not completely dissolve into a
liquid we say the liquid is saturated (full) with the solid.
- Let the undissolved borax settle to the bottom of the cup for about
five minutes.
- Pour the liquid off from the undissolved borax into another cup.
This is called decanting. The liquid is called the supernatant.
Save this liquid!
- The undissolved borax can be used to make more "blood-clot" slime.
How much water does it take to dissolve a 1/4 cup of borax?
- Prepare a gel glue/water solution.
- Add half of a 255 mL bottle of gel glue to another cup.
- Add a half a cup of water to the gel-glue cup and stir the glue-water
mixture with a stick for about five minutes. In this case all the
glue will dissolve in the water because they mix completely.
- Next, add a 1 fl. oz of iodine tincture (our whole bottle) to the water
and glue solution and mix well. This is your last chance to mix well!
- Finally, add the borax/water solution to the gel glue/water/iodine
solution (Amazingly, the mixture binds iodine very well.), mix slightly with
a wood stick (You won't want to use this stained stick again!), drain any
excess liquid (the blood may stain your clothes), and enjoy!
- You can handle the clot with your hands or gloves to shape it into
a heart, liver, etc. and impress all your friends with your new found
surgical skills. Besides adding visual appeal, the iodine helps to
preserve this version of slime from mold longer.
