Make Your Own 3D Movies to View with Polarizer Glasses!

You need a Java 1.1 Enabled Web Browser!

  • Philosophy

    • Sight and the psychology of vision is based upon seeing with both eyes.

    • Your depth perception is obtained by seeing the same image from two different angels, from your right and left eye.

    • Depth perception can also be from observing motion.

  • 3-D Movies

    • 3-D movies use the same philosophy by filming an image from two different positions.

    • The camera lens is split into halves.  One half directly films the image while the other half reflects off mirrors slightly changing the angle.  The focal point remains the same.

  • Make Your Own

    • Materials

      • About a square foot piece of plywood

      • 2 mirrors

      • Two clamps or some way to stabilize the mirrors

      • Camera

      • Hot glue gun and glue

      • Drill

      • Rubber bands

      • Polarizer

      • Polarizer glasses or 3-D glasses

      • Tape

      • Something to film!

    • Procedure

      • Drill a hole in the plywood so that you can screw the camera on to the plywood.  OR  Secure the camera to the plywood with rubber bands or tape.

      • Make the mirrors stand up strait by placing a clamp on the bottom of them.

      • Position the mirrors on the plywood as shown above and here so that the mirror catches the right half view of the camera lens.

      • Hot glue the mirrors in place.

      • Make a polarizer lens cover.

        • Cut a polarizer in half.

        • Tape together the two pieces at right angles to create your camera "lens cover".

        • Use polarizer glasses or 3-D glasses to turn your "lens cover" so that you can see through the right side with your right eye (left eye closed).  The right half will be polarized at a 45-degree angle and the left half will be polarized at a 135-degree angle so that it matches with the design of polarizer glasses.

        • Tape your "lens cover" so that it covers the camera lens.

      • Film your movie!!

    • Watch your movie

      • Set up the projector so that it is in the same position as the camera was when you filmed.

      • Place the polarizer lens cover over the projector lens.

      • Project the 3-D movie onto a lenticular silvered screen.

      • Put on your polarizer glasses or 3-D glasses to view your movie!!
